RE: Article: US agents given powers to seize/search laptops

I believe that in Germany, the Department of Homeland Security was called the "Gestapo". The US D of HS, like the Gestapo is becoming a law upon itself and eventually won't have to answer to anyone. It's even conceivable that it could arrest the President of the United States if it felt that the President did or said something that they deemed subversive.
Now there is a person who has a handle on things.
Welcome to America-- the 200 year experiment is over. Hopefully I will die before its gets really bad.

RE: Digital Converter box

Ok, IMO -- The RCA unit that a certain big box store (and others) are peddling is the worst one.
I am using a Channel Master unit right now, and it seems very good at receiving, but the on screen controls are less than I would like. However, on the first subject of receving, it will put a picture on the screen with say 10-20% signal strength.

RE: Digital Converter box

You might note that not all converter boxes are equal.
One in particular is WORTHLESS.....i.e. 50% signal on the signal strength meter and still no pic on the screen.
AND you will not find specifications relating to receive sensitivity on any of them (they dont want you to know how sorry they are)
Buyer beware. This is fact. One of the local stations here did a comparision on three or four of them. I played with one of the units beforehand here at the house....worthless I tell you ..... did I say worthless?

RE: CHP Officers Report on Age of Tires

Interesting topic and remarks.... My only comment is (after my experience today with my right rear inside tire blowing out),when the Service guy got there (and not the one Progressive gave he call to) we took a peek at these famous date codes everyone is talking about.
Now, its easy for me to know when I bought these tires. I was planning a trip to Alaska in August 2002 (had to turn around and come back from Wyoming but that's another story). I bought 8 new tires in June of 2002 getting ready for the trip.
Knowing I was going to try to get up the haul road to the artic circle I thought maybe a second spare might be good.
I ordered a new 19.5 wheel and carried it to the same place I got my 8 new tires from and had them mount one on that rim. It looked shinny new and I never gave it another thought.
Today however makes for an interesting turn of events:
The tire that blew out (looks smooth cut) has a date code of 1998
The "new second spare" has a date code of 1993 !!!!!!
And like I said all were bought in 2002.
Guess it pays to look at the date codes when you buy the tires!
Just an FYI
hum that place went out of business come to think of it

RE: question on 2-way GMRS radios

From the FCC Rules:
§ 95.29 Channels available.
(a) For a base station, fixed station,
mobile station, or repeater station (a
GMRS station that simultaneously re-transmits
the transmission of another
GMRS station on a different channel or
channels), the licensee of the GMRS
system must select the transmitting
channels or channel pairs (see § 95.7(a)
of this part) for the stations in the
GMRS system from the following 462
MHz channels:
462.5500, 462.5750, 462.6000, 462.6250, 462.6500,
462.6750, 462.7000 and 462.7250.
(b) For a mobile station, control sta-tion,
or fixed station operated in the
duplex mode, the following 467 MHz
channels may be used only to transmit
communications through a repeater
station and for remotely controlling a
repeater station. The licensee of the
GMRS system must select the trans-mitting
channels or channel pairs (see
§ 95.7(a) of this part) for the stations
operated in the duplex mode, from the
following 467 MHz channels:
467.5500, 467.5750, 467.6000, 467.6250, 467.6500,
467.6750, 467.7000 and 467.7250.

RE: question on 2-way GMRS radios

"mobile relay" = two frequencies in use = repeater station
The MOBILE transmits on Freq45xx.xxx And the MOBILE RELAY (repeater) receives that signal and retransmits it on Freq45y.yyy (which is ALWAYS exactly 5.0 Mhz BELOW the frequency that the mobile tranmits on.
Another MOBILE receives the MOBILE RELAY (repeater) on freq45y.yyy but would reply to the sending station on the MOBILE transmit freq45x.xxx.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS on uhf repeater operation.
However ---- one point to remember is that with ANY repeater operation - coverage is limited to how far any ONE unit can be from the relay (repeater station) AND effectively communicate with IT.
Meaning that if there are two units trying to use the relay AND one (or both) are not in range of the relay station itself for EFFECTIVE communications then they can not talk to each other.
Check rules b4 playing. - As I said I dont partake in GMRS on any level.

RE: question on 2-way GMRS radios

I am not an advocate of GMRS for several reasons BUT ...from the FCC website on GMRS bandplan:
Station Type Frequency (MHz)
mobile station or small base station operating in the simplex mode* 462.5625**
462.5875**
462.6125**
462.6375**
4462.6625**
462.6875**
462.7125**
base station, mobile relay station, fixed station or mobile station 462.5500
462.5750
462.6000
462.6250
462.6500
462.6750
462.7000
462.7250
mobile station, control station or fixed station in a duplex system 467.5500
467.5750
467.6000
467.6250
467.6500
467.6750
467.7000
467.7250
And since ALL of the repeater pairs are licensed and taken up in this area, I would say repeaters are good to go on GMRS and from the above
bandplan I think MOBILE relays are good to go as well.
Just a FYI

RE: A Real Puzzler and Cell Signal Question for the Experts

Was the phone connected directly to the bidirectional amp or are you using n antenna inside the rv?
If using an antenna inside AND there is not enough isolation between the two antennas they can and will interfere with each other.

RE: Digital TV Signal

And not all converter boxes AND Digital TVs are made the same !!!
Some have much better sensitivity (receiving ability) than others!!!!
(That translates to some are REALLY poor at best)

RE: Digital TV Reception

It sems not all converter boxes (and Digital tvs too) are built equal in terms of receive ability.
A friend/Customer of mine is the Chief Engineer here at the biggest station and they are going out and buying various converter boxes and testing them. He handed me on of the Zenith boxes to play with, but he has it set up at his office to compare side by side in real time and its funny that one box will pick up a station 90 miles away and the next one wont even try.
Dont go looking for receive sensitivity in the specs - it aint there...

RE: HDRV Antenna Company

This topic is better entertainment than anything on TV
Humm, Maybe I should scape the paint off my antenna to see if the signal gets better or worse. --no - wait--- I should Paint the antenna to see if it gets better or worse.
We did however , spend an hour or so yesterday testing the difference between analog and digital two way radio communications with handheld radios.
Digital went farther -but (of course) when it quit there was nothing.
Wait --it was the paint on those antennas too!!

I do have an old batwing , bought it from the general store back in 1846. Yes it will need to be upgraded.

RE: alternator not charging battery

If with the motor running and its dies when you remove the positive battery lead the problem is not the battery.
If you replaced the alternator and it is doing it, is the belt tensioned properly and actually runnig the alternator. If so, then I would look at the connection (wiring) from the alternator to the point where it ties to the positive of the battery. (you already know the rig will run with the battery connected, so the wiring from the battery has to be ok)
Just my .02 cents worth. Someone will probably tell me I am wrong.

RE: New to RV's ,How do you switch to the auxillary fuel tank?

You may have to run down the fuel lines. It may have a switch (ok valve) or it could be like what I did to a truck a long time ago and add the tank and manually transfer the fuel with a 12 volt pump. I have had it both ways (manal and switched with a hand valve)
I bet a crawl under the rig would answer the question.
